Ben Roethlisberger Injured In Steelers Victory Against Rams

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger injured his left knee during the game of the Steelers against the St. Louis Rams. He was taken out of the game are replaced by Michael Vick. While the severity of the injured is still uncertain Coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger will undergo an MRI after an evaluation.

Pittsburgh won the game 12-6. However, it may be a hollow victory if Roethlisberger will miss most of the games or even the entire season due to the injury. The injury happened in the third quarter with the Steelers ahead by 6. As Roethlisberger moved back to prepare for a pass, Mark Barron of the Rams moved towards Roethlisberger, who appeared to have suffered a hyper-extended knee.

Ben Roethlisberger remained on the ground for a long time before a cart came in to take him off the field.

Barron said he tripped on the feet of someone and felt getting caught on someone’s leg as he went down. If the hit is considered as an illegal play, Barron may have to suffer the consequences. While Tomlin did not have any issues with the play and no penalty was called, league officials will check if the rule was violated by Barron.

The rule indicates that rushing defenders are not allowed to hit the area along the knee of the passer who would have at least one foot on the ground. No foul will be called if the defender is fouled or blocked into the passer and would have no chance of avoiding the passer.

The rule footnotes indicate that defenders are not allowed to initiate lunges or rolls and hut hit the knee area of the passer even if the defender comes in contact with another player. It also indicates that no foul will happen if defenders swipe, grab or wrap the knee area of passers in order to tackle them

When Ben Roethlisberger was injured, he already had 20 for 24 with 192 yards. He also had one interception. Vick had 5 for 6 for a total of 38 yards. Le’Veon Bell scored the only touchdown of the game. Bell played his first game after being suspended for two games. The game was the first one in the season to have less than two touchdowns scored.

Vick joined the Steelers in August to serve as backup to Roethlisberger. The last time Vick had a winning record while playing as a quarter back was in 2011. It will be necessary for the offense of Pittsburgh to adjust to the style of Vick if Roethlisberger will miss a considerable number of games. Vick has an excellent ability to scramble but has an inaccurate throwing arm.

Aside from Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Vick, the Pittsburgh Steelers also have Landry Jones in the quarterback position.
