Google Chromebook Offers Windows Applications Using VMware

It is now possible for Windows applications to run on the Google Chromebook through virtual desktop services offered by VMware. The web giant revealed it will allow groups to save up to around $5,000 by combining the services offered by VMware and laptops using the Chrome OS.

Migration from the Windows XP OS will be facilitated by the VMware desktop virtualization. Support for Windows XP by Microsoft will end in April.

End user computing general manager and executive vice president Sanjay Poonen of VMware said a number of users may want to use thin client computing while using Window applications.

Virtual desktops and apps can be used by users of the Horizon View 5.3 of VMware on a Google Chromebook. However, the appeal of the VMware service lies on its ability to allow groups to run virtualized environments without managing back-end infrastructure.

Poonen revealed the service will be available within a couple of months. VMware and a limited number of partners will offer the service, which will allow groups to access complete virtual Windows desktops or application through the use of various VMware virtualization technologies.

The Remote Desktop Services will facilitate the streaming of applications or use of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure of VMware through VMware Horizon.

The Blast streaming software of VMware will also facilitate access to data, desktops and application using a browser. The Chrome-based laptop is currently available in the market at $179.

Chrome OS Product management vice president Caesar Sengupta of Google said utilizing the laptop from Google together with the service offered by VMware will allow groups to save money. Aside from the low price of the Google Chromebook, users will be able to minimize the use of product licenses as well as reduce administrative expenses that come with the use of individual computers.
