Johnny Winter Passes Away Inside A Swiss Hotel Room

Famed blues guitarist Johnny Winter passed away on Wednesday inside a Swiss hotel room. Winter was considered as the best blues guitar player in the 60s. A 1968 article on Rolling Stone indicated that he played the best and most fluid blues in the world.

He comes from a line of Lone Star blues guitar players that includes T-Bone Walker and Eric Johnson. Winter was at the crossroads of the blues during the period when British rock guitarists modified the blues when they played before American audiences. His talent earned the respect and admiration of his fans.

The self-titled album of Johnny Winter was released in 1969 through Columbia Records. It featured a number of blues legends, including Walter Horton and Willie Dixon. He also made an appearance during the Woodstock Festival in the same year.

He formed a band in the early part of the 1970s that included Rick Derringer, writer of Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo. Winter recorded the song in 1970 while Derringer recorded it in 1973. It became a popular song for high school bands in the 1970s.

In the middle part of the 1970s, a number of albums were released by Winter, including John Dawson Winter III, Saints & Sinners and Still Alive and Well. Despite his rise to stardom, he stayed true to the blues. Winter also produced four of the albums of Muddy Waters.

The famed guitarist released another album in 1977, Nothin’ but the Blues. All the other albums he released continued his blues legacy.

A four-disc retrospective focusing on the famed blues guitarist was released this year by Legacy Records of Sony. It featured numerous recordings from 1968 all the way to 2011. It also included praises from a number of renowned guitarists, including Eddie Van Halen, Ace Frehley, and Angus Young.

Winter continued to perform even up to the day he passed away. The death of Johnny Winter came four days after his Lovely Days Festival performance in Wiesen, Austria.
