David Ortiz Penalty Still Uncertain Following Saturday Night
No word has been received by John Farrell, the manager of the Boston Red Sox, following the ejection of David Ortiz last Saturday. However, Farrell believes that no other disciplinary action will be meted on the player.
The designated hitter of the Red Sox was ejected after destroyed the dugout phone in the seventh inning. The player was exasperated by the calls of Tim Simmons, the plate umpire of the game. The 3-and-0 pitch was called a strike by Timmons, which was repeated on the following pitch. But, he felt the pitch was a ball. He struck out on the pitch after that.
Each time Ortiz went to bat, the crowd booed loudly. However, the two-run home run in the third inning silenced the crowd. After getting back to the dugout, the player pretended to hit the phone.
David Ortiz indicated that the 3-and-0 strike call was the worst call for the year. However, he was infuriated when Timmons was adamant that his call was right. The player gestured to the umpire that he acted as if the call was right. But, Ortiz added that the call was wrong.
Ortiz said if an umpire indicates that a call was missed, he will walk away.
David Ortiz does not shy away from questioning calls. He is also quite demonstrative about it. Ortiz was ejected by Timmons after he attacked the phone instead of his gestures after he struck out.
Shane Victorino, an outfielder, indicated that he asked questions about the incident. He said that a player is rarely ejected for releasing some frustration. He has never seen anyone being thrown out of a game after releasing his frustration in the dugout.
According to Mike Winters, a member of the umpire crew, pieces of the phone flew out of the dugout after David Ortiz destroyed it.
