“The work produced by Commercial Window Shield at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport project was of excellent quality,” said Lisa Mach, resident
engineer at the Port of Seattle.

Officials at the Port of Seattle, troubled by the increase in terrorist events, in particular an attack in 2016 at Brussels Airport that resulted in 32 deaths, wanted to increase security at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which they manage. Sea-Tac, as the airport is known, is the country’s 9th busiest airport.

As part of their overall security plan, the port decided to secure all the glass in its always busy Gina Marie Lindsey Arrivals Hall by having security window film installed. Security window film has the ability to hold glass in place, even during the most catastrophic explosion or foul weather event. The film was developed in the late 1990s after the terrorist bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City in which many of the casualties and injured were struck by flying glass.

The process began with the hiring of Osborne Construction Co. of Kirkland, Wash., as general contractor of a larger renovation project that included the security window film installation. Osborne chose Commercial Window Shield over a number of other security window installation firms because of its considerable experience. Previously, Commercial Window Shield installed shatter resistant window film at Terminal 1 at O’Hare International Airport, the country’s third busiest airport.

The project specifications called for installing 8-mil clear shatter resistant window film with a perimeter wet glaze attachment system to 3,000 panes of glass. This totaled over 80,000 sq. ft. of security window film and 76,000 lineal feet of wet glaze. The security film was installed to all the airport entrance side windows on the baggage, parking and terminal levels and at Gina Marie Lindsey Arrival Hall, which is adjacent to Terminal A.

Aside from Commercial Window Shield’s stellar work installing the security window film, airport officials were impressed with the company’s organizational and planning skills. Airport construction projects of any kind are among the most challenging in the industry for the simple fact that airports never close and are often packed with passengers and airport employees. As a result, Commercial Window Shield’s schedule involved mostly working at night and early morning hours when the airport was not as crowded. The company’s other expertise is having a team of engineers who develop innovative ways to install security films in hard to reach places, as was the case at Sea-Tac.

Overall, Commercial Window Shield received high praise both from the contractor and airport officials for the work they completed.
