Health Tips to Remember Before Enjoying 2012 Carnival and Mardi Gras

Millions of people around the globe celebrate the Carnival and Mardi Gras every year.

Carnival dates vary but usually the celebration starts on a Saturday before Lent begins or commonly called as Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday" marks the last day of celebration.

Although these celebrations are enjoyable, they are also associated with certain health risks.  It is best to remember the following simple tips to ensure safety.

Stay healthy during your trip.  As much as possible, avoid traveling at night and choose only the safe destinations.

Cheap and tasty street food is abundant at Carnival celebrations.   However, contaminated food can cause diarrhea and other serious illnesses. Remember to eat only food that is well cooked and served hot, and drink only water and other beverages from sealed cans or bottles.

Dehydration is common during these festivities in tropical countries where the celebrations fall in their summer months of February or March. It is best to drink plenty of bottled water, keep cool and wear sunscreen.

After the trip, go to the doctor right away if you experience sickness like fever, cough or sore throat, or have trouble breathing.

Celebrate 2012 Carnival and Mardi Gras in good health. Enjoy your trip but keep these recommendations in mind to ensure you stay safe and healthy!
