Rockies Pummel Cubs in Record 12-Run Inning

Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies set a league record with 11 straight hits in the eight

The Colorado Rockies were leading 5-2 at the bottom of the eight inning looking to extend that lead into a more comfortable margin. They got it after fourteen batters.

The Rockies hit a record 12-run eight inning, on top of homeruns by Carlos Gonzalez, Ian Stewart and Dexter Fowler, to win against the Chicago Cubs 17-2 last Friday night.

"I'd never seen an inning like that," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We had two outs and two strikes on a hitter and they score 12 runs. I'd never seen an inning like that."

The Rockies set a league record with 11 straight hits in the eight, including two of four game hits by Gonzalez. The team also hit a franchise-record 13 hits in the same inning.

Colorado got a team-high 12 extra base hits in the game as Fowler and Stewart hit two-run homeruns each.

"That was pretty impressive. There was really nothing flukey to it," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "Every ball that got hit was barrelled up and hit about as hard as you'd like to see a baseball be hit."

Melvin Mora and Clint Barmes had two hits, Brad Hawpe and Chris Iannetta reached base twice, while Troy Tulowski had two doubles and three RBIs.

Every Colorado batter hit at least one in the eight inning.

Later, the Cubs expressed their dismay over what happened. "It was dumbfounding as for us as it was people to watch the game," said Marshall, who gave up five runs in the inning. "You hate to be on the receiving end. I don't think it's going to happen again."

The record hitting was an unusual event for the Colorado Rockies as their offense has been anemic in recent games. They have scored 11 total runs in their last four losing games, one less the total of just one inning in the record-breaking game.
