“Paranormal Activity 2” rules box-office
“Paranormal Activity 2”, released by Paramount Pictures, ruled the box-office this weekend raking in $41.5 million, the biggest opening for a horror movie for a three-day run. It beat last year’s “Friday the 13th” which earned $40.6 million, and the first film “Paranormal Activity” which earned an opening total of $21.1 million.
Midnight showings on Thursday garnered $6.3 million, jumping to $20.1 million on Friday. But viewership fell 35 percent on Saturday.
About 61 percent of the audience was younger than 25 years old, Paramount said, while exit polls made by Cinemascore said most moviegoers gave it a “B” rating.
The film’s performance may further weaken next weekend, when “Saw 3D” is released in theaters.
But Paramount is very pleased with the box-office performance of its film considering it only spent $3million to make it.
Meanwhile, “Hereafter,” from director Clint Eastwood, earned a respectable $12 million in 2,181 theaters. Around 80 percent of those who watched the supernatural drama were older than 30 years old. But Cinemascore reported moviegoers rated the film a “C+” which may signal a short run in cinemas.
Paramount’s other release “Jackass 3D” slipped 57 percent to earn $21.6 million but retained second place. The hit has now earned $87 million since it was released a week ago. Summit Entertainment’s action comedy film “Red” gained $15 million. “The Social Network” by David Fincher was 5th this week getting $7.3 million to bring its total to $72.9 million, at this point still a long way from the $100 million threshold to be called a bonafide blockbuster.
