According to authorities, more than 100 Beluga whales were found trapped under water between ice floes in Russia's Far East region. Local governor Roma Kopin had requested assistance with the present government to immediately provide an ice-breaker to free prisoners of ice floes in the Bering Sea.

The Beluga whale is one of the valued and protected animal species in Russia. It even has a special page in the website of Russian Prime Minister and nature lover Vladimir Putin. In its informative page where Amur tiger, polar bear and snow leopard are included, it says that Beluga whales measure up to 6 metres and weigh 2 tonnes. These wild animals can also stay under water for 25 minutes.

Roma Kopin added that the Beluga whales were imprisoned just 10 miles south of Yanrakynot village on the Bering Sea. Roma Kopin has initiated to communicate with the Transport Minister Igor Levitin and Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu to send an ice-breaker as soon as possible to save the Beluga whales who are starved and trapped. The longer they stay in that freezing and starving condition, it may lessen their chance for survival.

According to the Chukotka government, help is just two days away and hopefully could save the Beluga whales.
