The opening of the Games will be on the 27th of July next year. The soccer events are scheduled two days ahead prior the opening ceremonies due to hectic schedule.
In every Summer Olympic Games, soccer or football has been considered as one of the Olympic Sporting Events with the biggest revenue earners which draw crowds that features best players around the globe. Argentine Lionel Messi, the World’s Best Player in the last staging of the Olympic Games in Beijing, helped in drawing multitudes of football fans in all venues of the Beijing Games.
To date, 500,000 tickets for the soccer events have already been sold. The final match will be played in the Wembley Stadium located in London. Unfortunately, 1.5 million tickers are still to be sold one year before the opening ceremonies.
England is actually the birthplace of football where the Premier League attracts football fans regularly. However, the Olympic Games only allows 3 overage players to compete for the Men’s Under-23 Soccer competition while in the Women’s side, age limit is never a problem. The Olympic Games will only feature 16 teams for the men’s side while 12 teams for the women’s distaff.
The main reason for the slow turnout of the sales has been linked to the decision of having only one team for the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. People expected to have 4 different teams and up to now the selection of who will play for the team has not yet been finalized.
