US Spends Trillions in Wars Recent Study Reveals
A research conducted by Brown University approximated the US war on Afghanistan, Iraq, plus the counterinsurgency in Pakistan to amount to $4 trillion.
In addition to this, these wars leave 225,000 dead, both civilians and soldiers.
The research group which is consisted of economists, anthropologists, lawyers, humanitarian personnel, and political scientists estimated that the sole expenditures in taking care of the injured will chunk up $1 trillion in 30 to 40 years’ time.
However, the US Congressional Budget Office, has only estimated all the costs of war through 2021 at around $1.8 trillion. The report from Brown says that it is a gross underestimate, considering that the US has already spent $2.3 to $2.7 trillion.
So far, more than 6,000 US troops and 2,300 contractors have died since the September 11 bombing. A relatively large number of disability claims have been filed, 550,000 is the number by 2010. There are on the other hand approximately 137,000 civilian people from Afghanistan and Iraq who died in the conflicts. And around 8 million have been displaced.
But the main question that should be raised here is whether the financial cost, and more especially the sacrificed lives of the people are worth as the price of the restoration peace and prosperity. Looking at the facts, Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden are now dead, but it seems like there are still more work before the restoration of democracy in these battle-scarred lands.
