Speaker Boehner

Obama-Boehner debt deal thwarted by Eric Cantor

Negotiations to raise the federal borrowing is still a hot topic in the legislation and most of the House Republicans had been stubborn in agreeing with the said plan causing further frustrations for President Obama.

He said, "I think Speaker Boehner has been very sincere about trying to do something big," in an effort to protect his negotiating partner. It has not been a very easy job or Boehner since the majority of the House Republicans are much more inclined to agree on immediate solutions than a long term cure and possibly prevention of such economic turmoil if certain sound and ideological decisions were made.

The negotiations were also made difficult by Eric Cantor's undeniable influence over the majority of the Republicans and domination on the debates regarding the negotiations. He argues that the interests of the majority is to prevent tax increase and the said event may lead to it.

Due to the events that have happened, many believed that there was a rift between Cantor and Boehner, but Cantor denies these allegations saying that, “I know you all love to write the soap opera here, but the Speaker and I are on the same page."

Although John Boehner has been capitalizing that no tax increase will happen, it has always been Cantor who made the moves to prevent it from happening. John Heilemann, the New York magazine political columnist says that, "I think what we learned over this past weekend is that John Boehner…is not really speaker of the House. Eric Cantor is the speaker of the House."

The negotiations last Monday aimed to identify a common ground for both parties, but instead of that, Cantor's determination shone at its finest. He came up with a proposal that would increase revenue, such as cuts to Medicare without providing a dime in savings through closing special-interest giveaways.
