Police arrests 160 people in Violent London Riots
London — 160 people were arrested by the police after riots violently arose in a destitute London locality few miles away from the venue of the 2012 London Olympic Games next year. Young people hooded and masked forcibly robbed surrounding shops and stores, blaze vehicles on fire and attacked fiercely the policemen bound to disperse the demonstrations among youngsters. The bloody incidents now have raised concerns and worries about the security of the upcoming 2012 London Summer Games. 32 policemen were slightly injured while 3 of them seriously wounded after a car hit them while trying to disperse the crowd. The London Police was shocked by the extreme level of violence and hatred directed towards them by the unruly crowd.
The violence started Saturday night in Tottenham, a London suburb located in the north, after the public was angered by the fatal shooting of the police to a 29 year old father, Mark Duggan. The violence continued in other parts of London by Sunday night till Monday morning. The unrest and strife even reached Oxford Circus, the city’s main business, tourist and shopping district. The death of Duggan Thursday was quite peaceful but turned out to be gloomy after 500 people started its violent protest in front of the police station in Tottenham late Saturday. The unruly crowd thrown gasoline-filled bottles to the police lines in front while others used baseball bats seriously injured some police officers.
Tottenham has already a history of violent demonstrations way back in 1985. Series of riots led to stabbing of a policeman and 60 people were wounded 16 years ago. The tension was between the black inhabitants of the community and the police. Since then, the tension has already been peacefully settled but the latest shooting incident has awakened the old animosities and hostilities in the area.
