Syrian Envoy Expresses Dismay During U.N. Council Meeting

United Nations - Bashar Ja'afari, Syrian ambassador to the United Nations, expressed his dismay to all European ambassadors because of their discriminatory and biased remarks against the unrest in his home country, Syria. Ja'afari said that the violence in Syria is very much similar to what is happening in London lately.

An envoy from London immediately reacted to the statement uttered by the Syrian ambassador saying that it is absurd to compare the London incident with what is happening in Syria. Ja'afari was disappointed when the term “gangs” used by England's Prime Minister in the London riots cannot be used in the Syrian incidents. Ja'afari boldly said that it is plain hypocrisy and arrogance. Philip Parham, deputy ambassador from London, calmly addressed the statement of Ja'ahari saying that the London riots have been properly handled by the British Government in a just, lawful, transparent and proportionate way to restore back peace and order. However, the situation is different in Syria where thousands of innocent and unarmed civilians were unjustly attacked and killed. To date, 2,000 innocent civilians have already been killed in Syria.

Ja'afari countered the statement by saying that the truth has been manipulated by most of the European ambassadors by undermining the recent important and positive improvements that Syria has achieved so far. Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador, told the council after the session ended that the United States is hoping that the United Nations will do necessary steps in order to resolve the conflict and restore the rule of law in Syria. U.S. urged the United Nations to send one of its senior officials to Damascus to start the peace process immediately.
