Chinese Government Beefs-up Anti Cyber Hacking Laws

Beijing — China will toughen its fight against computer and cyber hacking by imposing stricter fines and penalties, according to the country’s state media. The Supreme Court and the prosecutor’s office have already laid the newest law to take effect by September 1. The newest law specifies that people who purchase, sell or cover illegally obtained network control or data will be criminally liable.

Online and cyber hacking has been reported to be very rampant in China. The said law will help in the campaign of eradicating cyber crimes. Many hacking attacks appeared to have originated from China that targets big U.S. companies and human rights organizations, according to the Pentagon. But China said that they are one of the biggest victims of hacking attacks throughout the whole world.

Cyber and online hacking may pose threat and endanger a country’s national security and may also infringe the public interests. In China alone, more than 42,000 websites were hacked and easily accessed by cyber crime perpetrators. It is also alarming to note that the number of computer and cyber viruses has increased to 80% for the past 5 years. China’s ministry also estimated that 8 out of 10 computers connected to the internet may have been accessed already or infiltrated by hackers.

On Wednesday, Pentagon has warned China over the rampant hacking attacks that may not only be used to access information but may also be used for military means. Google has pulled out in China last year after concerns escalated due to sophisticated and high-profile hacking incidents in the country. Dow Chemical, Yahoo and Adobe were also among the target of the hackers as reported.
