Americans Dominate World Championships. Daegu, South Korea — It was a golden half hour for the United States as 3 of its athletes gave stunning and stellar performances, winning 3 gold medals at the world championships Thursday. The surprise win for the day was Jennifer Barringer Simpson who won the gold medal at the 1,500 meter. The last time the United States won the same event was 28 years ago in 1983, when Mary Decker-Slaney outclassed her field in the 1,500 meter event. Jesse Williams also was victorious in the high jump event after a 2 decade gold medal drought for the United States in the same event. The third gold medal came from Lashinda Demus in the 400 meters women’s hurdles. Demus became the 3rd fastest time in history in the same event.
At the end of the day, the United States of America led the medal race with 7 gold medals to boast and 12 medals overall. Russia was not far behind at second place with 4 gold medals and also 12 overall. The day was full of surprises. Oscar Pistorius, double-amputee paralympic star, led his teammates and helped the South African team broke their national record in the 4x400 meter men’s relay.
Simpson, the American runner who won the 1, 500 meter race, shocked everyone when she outclassed everyone in her field. Simpsons did not even made the top 10 best time in this season before coming to the world championships.
