Serena Williams stunned by Aussie Sam Stosur
Serena Williams stunned. New York — Sam Stosur of Australia upset Serena Williams of the United States Sunday with a score of 6-2, 6-3 to win the coveted U.S. Tennis Women’s Open Final this year. It was Stosur’s first grand slam title in her tennis career. She played the game as if it was a match of her life till she defeated the most formidable women’s tennis player of her generation.
Stosur spoiled the hopes of the American public that a local player should win at the height of the 10th year anniversary of the September 11 commemoration. Wiliams was hoping to win her fourth title in the U.S. Open but failed to replicate her performance before the finals.
Williams did not drop a single set in all her games prior to her heart-breaking loss to the Aussie in the finals. She was seen repeatedly arguing with the umpire throughout the last set of the game. Stosur, 27 years old, remained composed throughout the game despite some moments of rebuke from Williams and the chair umpire.
The Aussie displayed her consistency and won the finals in a jam-packed Arthur Ashe Stadium. Stosur came to the U.S. Open as 9th seed. She became the first woman from Australia to win the coveted U.S Open crown since Margaret Court way back in 1973.
