Typhoon Roke Forces 1.3 million Evacuees
Tokyo — A massive evacuation as advised by the Japanese Government is currently underway to safeguard 1.3 million residents as Typhoon Roke approaches the country threatening the chief city of Nagoya with landslides and strong and heavy rains. In Nagoya alone, an industrial city as part of Aichi Prefecture in Central Japan, 1.1 million residents were evacuated while smaller scale evacuations were also conducted in other Japanese cities in the western part of Japan.
So far, there are no major interferences and disruptions to plant operations in Nagoya as reported. The typhoon’s eye has been recorded to be at 130 miles or 210 km east-southeast of Tanegashima, an island in Southern Japan, and the Typhoon is moving at the speed of 13 miles or 20 km east-northeast per hour as of 5pm, Japanese Meteorological Agency reported. Heavy rains have caused overflowing of some rivers in Aichi. A Japanese official has urged people to exercise due care or as much as possible the greatest caution to disasters that might endanger the public caused by strong rains, winds and waves.
Nagoya has already requested Japan’s military to send some of its forces to help the city prepare for its disaster prevention measures, the official added. Japan has recently been plagued and devastated when tropical storm Talas killed 100 people in the western part of Japan earlier this month. The Fukushima Daiichi Plant was spared by Talas and was unaffected by the storm.
