Charlie Sheen pleads guiilty to assault charges

In exchange for a deal that involves zero jail time and the dropping of more serious charges against him, movie star Charlie Sheen entered a guilty plea to the assault charges filed by his wife, Brooke Mueller Sheen, alleging that he hit her during a Christmas Day altercation.

The star of “Two and a Half Men” was given as sentence of 30 days probation, 30 days rehabilitation, and 36 hours of anger management classes. The court gave hime 30 days to arrange the sentence at Promises Treatment Center in California.

Sheen has spent 93 days earlier this year at the center, and his attorney Yale Galanter said that the earlier time spent there may be credited and counted against his court sentence.

"Credit for time served is absolutely on the table," Galanter said. "How much credit he gets is up to Promises."

The facility refused to comment, saying that clients are entitled to their privacy, and adding that drug and alcohol offenders are admitted there regularly.

For pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault, Sheen’s attorney said prosecutors agreed to drop a felony menacing charge and a criminal mischief charge. It also stipulates that Sheen may not possess firearms and adds serious consequences if the terms are not met by the actor.

A previous agreement orders Sheen to serve a 30-day jail sentence in exchange for pleading guilty back in July. But contention over terms of a proposed work release program delayed the plea bargain.

The district attorney, Martin Beeson, explained that Sheen’s case of avoiding jail time is not out of the ordinary since the actor has no criminal record in Colorado.

Judge James Boyd credited Sheen’s time spent in anger management sessions. Sheen already finished 36 hours of anger management classes in California, but it would be the 9th Judicial Probation department who will ultimately decide whether any credit can be applied to his case.
