Rafael Nadal stunned by unknown Florian Mayer

Rafael Nadal was given an early exit after he was beaten by Florian Mayer in a match considered by many tennis enthusiasts as an upset win with the score of 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the Shanghai Masters Thursday.  Mayer was successful in giving Nadal a hard time during the match. Winning 21 out of the 29 total approaches he was able to do during the match.

On the other hand, Andy Roddick advanced as he trounced Nicolas Almagro of Spain with the score 6-3, 6-4. Roddick will play David Ferrer in the next round. Ferrer defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero in the other match that ended 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.

It was the 2nd straight year that Nadal failed to make it to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters. Nadal, a top-seeded Spanish tennis player, lost to Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the 3rd round of the Shanghai Masters last year. The loss was just a few weeks after Nadal’s maiden win at the U.S. Open.

It will be just the 2nd time in a total of 16 tennis tournaments that Nadal failed to penetrate the quarterfinals as of this year. The other tournament where he failed to make the quarterfinals was during the Canadian Open last August where he stumbled to Ivan Dodig of Croatia.
