2011 Rugby World Cup: Australia Defeats Wales for 3rd Place Finish

Auckland - Despite losing 2 key rugby players at the 1st 22 minutes of the game, Australia was still able to outplay Wales with a score of 21-18 to finish a commendable 3rd place at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Australia, two-time World Cup champion, lost Kurtley Beale, fullback, due to injury at the 8 minute mark of the game. Luckily, despite the setback Aussie Berrick Barnes, center, converted an attempt to bag the first score of the game held at Eden Park.

Few minutes after, Aussie Quade Cooper, flyback, was hit by a hard injury, ligament damage, ejecting him from the game. Wales had the opportunity to score after Cooper was ejected from the game. At the half-time, Australia leads with a score of 7-3. After the 65th minute of the game, Australia never miss the opportunity to widen their lead with a back-to-back scores from two penalties after Hook of Wales missed to convert an opportunity, score 13-8.

The game finished in favor of the Wallabies with a final score of 21-18. It was Wales’ best place finish ever in the 24 year history of the Rugby World Cup. Gatland, a New Zealander playing for Wales, said they could have finished 3rd but because of poor kicking the team lost the opportunity. Gatland added that reaching the semi-finals is a great feat already. We have lots of young players in the team and that indeed is a positive indication of a good showing by Wales in the next staging of the World Cup. Australia had won twice already in 1991 and 1999, finished 2nd place in 2003 and 4th in 1987. It was Australia’s first time to finish 3rd.

Indianapolis - Rupert Boneham, the 2004 Survivor All-Stars Edition winner, announced Saturday his intention to run as governor of Indiana. Boneham has been the overwhelming top choice of the fans at the All-Stars Edition of the Survivor series, making him earned a whopping $1 million.
