Rory McIlroy Crowned Shanghai Masters Champion
Shanghai — Rory McIlroy, defending U.S. Open Champion, won the coveted Shanghai Masters Sunday in a sudden death play-off versus Anthony Kim of the United States. Before the sudden death play-off, McIlroy had the chance to win the title with a birdie putt at the 18th hole but missed the shot by a few inches.
The 22 year old from Northern Ireland has a 3 shot lead before he and Kim tied at 18-under 270 to force a sudden death play-off. It was McIlroy’s first win out of the 3 career playoffs he had. McIlroy was happy to win a tournament that offers the biggest prize offer in golf history that was held at the Lake Malaren Masters course designed by Jack Nicklaus. For winning the championship, McIlroy is now $2 million richer. The prize was the richest so far in the history of golf while Kim earned $750,000 for placing 2nd.
30 players were invited to participate in the tournament which was in its debut year. There were few moments in the tournament that I screw my game and I should have gave a better swing, the champion said. But despite some bad plays, I’m happy that I was able to pull it off, he added. Hunter Mahan of the United States and Noh Seung-yul of South Korea finished joint 3rd.
