Indian Hospital fire Leaves 89 People Dead, 6 Arrested

In Eastern India, 6 staff members were arrested after a fire killed at least 89 people in the hospital.Javed Ahmed Khan of the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister stated that 6 of the staff worked at the five-storey hospital in Kolkata City. Six of them were arrested for negligence. y staff in the hospital. A video scene was broadcasted by CNN-IBN, a CNN affiliate showing crowds wearing face masks and rushing patients on the streets.

Crowds of people stood outside the hospital holding each other while others were busy talking to their cell phones. Others, who were trapped inside the hospital, broke windows to let the smoke out, according to CNN-IBN. According to authorities a physician and two attendants died, while 60 patients and hospital staff were greatly injured of the incident.

Further, D.P. Biswas, director-general of the fire department said that some fire victim died of smoke inhalation in the hospital's basement. Authorities are still working to determine what caused the sudden blaze that started at 4 a.m.

Based on the preliminary investigation conducted by officials, the hospital had safety violations in the basement as it was used to park cars, house medical supplies and also as an oncology department. Due to this, hospital’s license was immediately revoked.
