Virgin Mary Pregnancy Billboard Sparks Controversy

A new billboard showing Virgin Mary holding in her hand a pregnancy test with a “positive” reading has sparked thoughts and conversations. The new billboard is called “Mary is in the pink” was bought by the St. Matthews-in-the-City Church in Auckland, New Zealand and bears no text or tagline.

According to local TV station 3 News, this controversial billboard is the latest holiday-themed billboards intended for the church. In 2009, another controversial billboard was posted wherein it featured Mary and Joseph, both in bed. Further, the 2009 billboard includes a tagline, “Poor Joseph, God was a hard act to follow.”

According to Vicar Glynn Cardy, St. Matthews-in-the-City Church wanted to highlight on what it’s like to be a real mother with a real child. . "It's about a real pregnancy, a real mother and a real child.  It's about real anxiety, courage and hope."

On St. Matthews-in-the-City Church website, the church stated that the absence of a text or tagline on the Virgin Mary billboard is intended to invite and provoke a thought and opinion: "We hope to do so with an image and no words. We invite you to wonder what your caption might be."

The church plans to post the controversial billboard until Christmas Day.
