Creator of Captain America Joe Simon has died at the age of 98, according to family and relatives on Thursday. Captain America is a superhero in red, white and blue of the United States flag who has extraordinary powers from experimental serum and has an indestructible shield.

Joe Simon died of natural causes at his home in New York on Wednesday. According to Steve Saffel who has worked with him on autobiography, "Joe Simon: My Life in Comics," said that Simon was surrounded by his family and loved ones.

It was in 1940 when Simon and Kirby’s first released their Captain America comic and sold nearly one million copies. The first issued comic had the fictional Captain America take on Hitler. Steve Saffel added, “"Joe's feeling was the comic books often succeeded or failed based upon the quality of the villain ... and he realized that they had the best villain you could have in Adolf Hitler."

This 2011, "Captain America: The First Avenger," which prominently credited Simon and Kirby as the character's creators, earned more than $368 million at worldwide box offices.

The “renaissance man” is survived by his five children and eight grandchildren.
