Miss Mexico wins Miss Universe title

Miss Mexico Wins Miss Universe 2010

Jimena Navarrete of Guadalajara, Mexico won the Miss Universe beauty pageant 2010

Brunette beauty Jimena Navarrete of Guadalajara, Mexico won the Miss Universe beauty pageant at Las Vegas on Monday. The 22-year old beat out 82 other contestants from around the world.

She was the first of five finalists to answer a question in the most nerve-wracking portion of the show.

Wearing a red one-strapped gown, she walked elegantly across the stage holding her gown like a cape. She earlier strutted across the stage wearing a violet bikini.

She drew the question from Olympic gold medalist figure skater Evan Lysacek, who asked how she felt about unsupervised use of the Internet. She answered that the Internet is a very important tool today but parents need to be careful and supervise its use by their children.

“I do believe that the Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time,” she said. “We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”

Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps was first runner-up and Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell was second runner-up.

Navarrete succeeded Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela who was the 2009 winner, and becomes the second Miss Universe winner from Mexico after Lupita Jones, who won the crown in 1991.

Miss Venezuela Marelisa Gibson, who would have won a third consecutive title for the South American nation, and Miss USA Rima Fakih, both did not make it to the top 15 finalists.

Among the prizes to be received by Navarrete was a luxury New York apartment with living allowances, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy, and supplies of jewelry, clothes and shoes.
