Roger Federer Defeated by “Unknown” Player

Roger Federer once again tasted defeat for the second time in a row as United States won over Switzerland in the Davis Cup World Group in Fribourg on Saturday.

Former world number one Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka had to win the doubles to keep the tie alive after the U.S. won last Friday's two singles.  However, despite the good start, the Swiss pair lost 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 to Mike Bryan and Mardy Fish.

It is a sweet revenge on the part of Mardy Fish who also had suffered two defeats in the quarter-finals against Spain's David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez last year.

Spain joined America in the quarter-finals with the score 3-0 against Kazakhstan in Oviedo and gave their new captain Alex Corretja a good start without the presence of Rafa Nadal and Ferrer.

Federer has never experienced winning the Davis Cup and would definitely have to wait for another year to recover from his humbling experience of defeat for two consecutive days.

"I thought we actually played pretty well," said Federer. "It was again a high standard from both sides with not much between us.”

"We had our chances but maybe they were a touch better than us and that shows in the score. We played well for a long time but we had a couple of games when we struggled a bit too much," the former world number one athlete added.

United States will next play against Canada or France who are level 1-1 in their tie.
