Paris Hilton avoids jail time

Celebrity Paris Hilton has avoided jail time and instead would serve a year of probation as part of a plea deal with prosecutors of her drug charges lawsuit in Las Vegas, according to David Roger, Clark County District Attorney on Friday.

She was arrested in Las Vegas in August 27 and charged with drug possession. Hilton pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor charges to avoid a felony conviction.

The 29-year old was arrested inside the posh Wynn resort, after a small bag of cocaine weighing about 0.8 grams fell out of her purse and was seen by police.

Hilton will plead guilty to charges of drug possession and obstructing a police officer.

Aside from one year probation, she must also attend and pass a drug abuse program, pay a $2,000 fine, and serve 200 hours of community service.

The district attorney said he wanted a promise from Hilton to stay out of trouble.

“If she is arrested for anything besides a minor traffic violation she will spend a year in jail,” Roger said. “”There will be no discussion. The court will have no discretion.”

Hilton is not required to report to a probation officer but must ensure she would not break any laws.

Hilton and her boyfriend Cy Waits, 34, was stopped in their Cadillac Escalade after a police officer smelled a “vapor trail” of marijuana. She was banned from Wynn resorts on the Las Vegas Strip after her arrest, and he was fired as a nightclub partner.
