Australian Court Bans Tobacco Pack Logo
Australia’s highest court prohibits tobacco companies from using its logos to their cigarettes packs. They also urged other countries to implement the law against cigarette promotion which was upheld just yesterday.Tobacco companies, on the other hand, argued that removing the brand designs and cigarette logos would greatly affect the value of their features.
The main intention of the approved law is to discourage the consumers from purchasing cigarettes and tobacco. By December 1, all tobacco products will be changed into dull shade of olive green packs and with graphic health warning sign displaying the images of mouth cancer, blinded eyeballs and other smoking-related diseases.
Philip Morris International, British American Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco and other tobacco companies were all disappointed by the court’s decision and worry that there might be a possible decline in the cigarette and tobacco industry because of the law being implemented.
They also claimed that the passed law will only create bigger opportunity for the illegal tobacco sellers to counterfeit the cigarette packs since the materials will be cheaper and the displayed images will all look the same. However, Tanya Plibersek, Australia’s Health Minister, rejected the said claims by stating that strict monitoring on the prevention of counterfeiting will still be executed.
