Another Cantaloupe Outbreak in 2012

A number of consumers recently purchased cantaloupes that came from southwestern Indiana were given advice by health officials not to consume them and throw away any remaining pieces. Although not all cantaloupes were imported from the said state, people who bought this fruit and are not sure where it came from were also urged to do away with it.

A warning for retailers of the cantaloupe fruit is currently in effect to stop operators on selling or serving it, especially those who got their supply from the farm in Indiana.

The officials from the state of Indiana conducted its own investigation and found it necessary to withdraw all those that have been sent out to the market. The distribution of the fruit from the farm producing the fruit in Indiana had also been temporarily stopped.

Reports say that around 30 people have become ill and hospitalized after eating cantaloupes. Two individuals from Kentucky have been reported to have died. In total, around one hundred fifty persons from other twenty states have been infected by the Salmonella Typhimurium bacteria.

Investigators collaborate and continue their efforts in tracing other possible sources of cantaloupes. The number of cases has a high likelihood of increasing. This multistate outbreak is similar to last year’s that was caused by consuming the same fruit.
