NFL to investigate Brett Favre
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre will be investigated by the National Football League according to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was non-committal when asked about how long it would take for the league to finish the probe or whether it would slap sanctions against Favre.
“I’d be hesitant to say anything until I…make sure we can get all the information,” Goodell said following the NFL owners’ meeting in Chicago. “We’re seeking to get cooperation to make sure we understand all the facts.”
Favre is facing allegations that he made sexual advances, including texting lewd photos of himself, to a female television reporter while he was playing for the New York Jets two years ago.
The Vikings quarterback has refused to comment about the allegations hurled against him but has apologized to his teammates for causing a distraction.
Goodell has instituted the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy which was the basis for the past suspensions of quarterbacks Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger.
“Before we jump to any conclusions, let’s be sure we understand the facts,” the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, the owners’ meeting centered on the issue of the collective bargaining agreement set to expire in March.
There has not been a labor dispute in the NFL sinc 1987, while every other major sports organization in the United States has had a lockout or strike during that period.
“This will be resolved at the collective bargaining table,” Goodell said. “Our focus is to get there sooner rather than later, get an agreement and bargain in good faith so that we can continue to play football.”
