Hugo Chavez Re-elected as Venezuela’s President
Incumbent president Hugo Chavez retained leadership in Venezuela after the elections was held Sunday, October 7th. He will be serving his third term for another six years carrying his platform of greater nationalization and 21st century socialism. His new term will start on January 10.
Chavez was known for nationalizing large portions of the economy. He was also responsible for establishing vast pool of programs which benefited the poor. His victory was declared in the name of Caracas-born, Simon Bolivar, a 19th century independence hero.
The 56-year-old president wore his signature red-shirt as he delivered his speech ahead with the socialist revolution at the balcony of Miraflores presidential palace. His cheering supporters were there to give their full support and celebrate his victory.
With Bolivar’s replica sword, he said, "Today we've shown that Venezuela's democracy is one of the best democracies in the world, and we will continue to show it. Venezuela will continue its march toward the democratic socialism of the 21st century."
For his next term, Chavez called for unity with the opposition in seeking a serene future for the South American country. He stressed, “I would like to thank, first of all, the opposition leadership, because they have recognized the truth, the truth of people's victory…" He added, "That is why I begin by thanking them, because we are all brothers in Simon Bolivar's fatherland."
Furthermore, he stated, "The voice of the majority must respect the voice of the minority. That is the first step towards our living in peace together."
Hugo Chavez said he will be conforming to the policies of nationalization expansions, as well as, providing equal rights and focus on the poor. Chavez idolizes Simon Bolivar and his policies are reflective of the latter’s original plans from some two centuries ago.
