Apple Unveils Ipad Mini
With all the undying chitchats traveling for months along with techies across the world waiting with unexplained excitement, Apple finally publicized the arrival of its iPad Mini today at the California Theatre in San Jose, Calif.
The smaller version of the iPad that can be held in one hand, it is also as thin as a pencil -- 7.2 millimeters or about one-quarter inch with an entirely new design features. It also weighs 0.68 pounds, 53 percent lighter than the third-generation iPad.
"Others have tried to make tablets smaller than the iPad, but they have failed miserably," said Phillip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "What does the other platform have? Phone applications stretched up."
A dual-core A5 chip, Facetime HD camera, 5MP iSight camera on the back, 802.11 a/b/g/n wifi, a Lightning connector and 10 hours of battery life are some of the special features the Mini offers. It will also come with iOS 6, Apple's mobile operating system with more than 200 features.
"Apple has always been a premium hardware manufacturer. It's basically a hardware company and they don't have Google advertising or Amazon's online store to fall back on," said Destination Wealth Management CEO Michael Yoshikami.
Apple Inc will start selling the 8-inch version of the iPad on Friday to compete with Amazon.com Inc's Kindle and other smaller tablets, but it set a higher-than-expected price tag of $329 that Wall Street fears could curb demand.
Schiller later defended Apple's pricing of the iPad mini, telling reporters he expects consumers to recognize quality and be willing to pay for it.
