Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder donated company shares in value of $500 million to Silicon Valley Community Foundation. A nonprofit foundation that works with various donors to distribute finances for projects both locally and around the world.

Mark Zuckerberg later said through his Facebook profile that he would try to concentrate his future donations in the health and education fields.

News of his donation came through Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook profile, where he also confirmed that both he and his wife Priscilla Chand have signed the “Giving Pledge”, a movement led by billionaires Warren Buffet and Bill Gates to encourage wealthy people to donate a vast part of their fortune to philanthropic causes.

“Today, in order to lay a foundation for the new projects, we’ve made a contribution of 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation … Together, we will look for areas in education and health to focus on next. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to have as positive an impact in our next set of projects,” Zuckerberg wrote.

As a response Emmett Carson, CEO of the Silicone Valley Community Foundation said “Mark’s generous gift will change lives and inspire others in Silicon Valley and around the globe to give back and make the world a better place.”

This is not the first philanthropic action Mark Zuckerberg has taken; he has donated vast sums of money in the past, especially in the education field.
