Egyptian Constitution Passes With Overwhelming Support
Egyptians voted in large numbers in favor of the controversial Constitution drafted by Egypt President Mohamed Mursi. Results seen this Tuesday have shown that the Islamist power in Egypt is basically unstoppable.
The final figures of the referendum have shown that the constitution passed with a 63.8 percent total. This marks the third consecutive electoral victory that Mohammed Mursi and his Islamist party have had since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak’s regime.
Mursi declared that the controversial Constitution offers protection for all minorities and that the sooner it is adopted the sooner Egypt will start to improve its dwindling economy.
The draft of this constitution is controversial because it mixes politics and religion in what most see as a detrimental way.
This is another loss suffered by secularists and liberals in Egypt and indeed in the entire part of North Africa.
As the Arab Spring saw a revolt against dictators and rulers, secularists and liberals feel their revolutions have been hijacked by the over-religious Islamist parties.
Murad Ali, Senior official of the Muslim Brotherhood Freedom and Justice Party told the press that “I hope all national powers will now start working together now to build a new Egypt … I see this as the best constitution in Egypt’s history.”
