Norman Schwarzkopf, Dies From Pneumonia Complications

General H Norman Schwarzkopf died this Thursday in Tampa, Fla. at the age of 78 from a complicated case of pneumonia.

“Stormin’ Norman” as his nickname was during his service as Desert Storm commander, a nickname he earned through his no-nonsense, serious behavior; especially with his subordinates was something he didn't quite enjoy.

Those who knew him best, especially after his retirement from the United States Armed forces said General Norman Schwarzkopf was a very chatty and friendly individual and that he preferred the more light-hearted nickname given to him by his troops, “The Bear”.

General Norman Schwarzkopf was named Commander in Chief of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa in 1988.

From here he oversaw the military effort in about two dozen countries all across the Middle East and the North of Africa, including Pakistan.

He commanded operation Desert Storm, an organized military effort led by President George H W Bush and involving 30 other countries to drive Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait.

The operation was a success and earned Norman Schwarzkopf a high profile and a good reputation. Even though he was courted by many politicians to become a member of their party General Norman Schwarzkopf chose to stay out of politics and lead a very private life after his retirement, being involved in quite a few children’s charities.
