US Drones Hit The Taliban In South Waziristan
Intelligence officials in Pakistan revealed that the Taliban suffered another blow as US drone strikes killed fifteen people including Mullah Nazir, a Taliban commander. Nazir or Maulvi Nazir Wazir, was among the eleven people who were killed by a suspected US drone strike in South Waziristan.
Following the signing of a peace agreement by Nazir and the Pakistani government, Nazir was not in good terms with the Taliban in Pakistan. The Taliban commander reportedly agreed not to attack military or government targets of Pakistan although he is supposedly responsible for attacks on US military targets.
A suicide bomb nearly ended the life of Nazir last month. Following the attack, the Taliban commander told the Mehsud tribe to leave South Waziristan. The warning also included Hakimullah Mehsud a Pakistani Taliban leader.
In addition to the Taliban leader, two deputies also perished in the suspected US drone attack. Another strike that targeted a vehicle killed four individuals.
Officials revealed that one missile from the US drone initially hit the vehicle. Two more missiles were fired as people came to the aid of the occupants of the vehicle.
Attacks from suspected US drones have increased recently in the mainly ungoverned tribal region of Pakistan. The region supposedly offers a safe haven for rebels who are at the forefront of the insurgency across Afghanistan although the US revealed that the use of drones is effective against such groups. Among the militants that have found relative safety in the region is the Taliban.
