Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition For 2013 Revealed
Kate Upton was selected as the cover girl for the 2013 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition for the second straight year, as shown in an image that was leaked recently. The revelation resulted to a congratulatory tweet from the 2010 cover girl of the same magazine, Brooklyn Decker.
This year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is expected to enter the market by February 12 while the official launch will be at the show of David Letterman.
Kate Upton will join a number of models who have appeared on the cover of the swimsuit edition at least twice. The most number of appearances on the cover was attained by Elle Macpherson, who had five appearances on the cover.
Getting on the cover of the swimsuit edition of the magazine has led to a number of lucrative offers for a number of models. In addition to becoming the cover model of a number of magazines, Kate Upton has also represented a number of companies including Sobe, DirecTV, Guess, and Mercedes-Benz.
The first Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition came out on January 20, 1964. The decision to feature a swimsuit edition was made by Andre Laguerre, the editor during that time. He wanted to increase readership during the winter season. The concept caught on and the magazine has reaped the benefits from it. It was initially a supplement to the magazine when it first came out.
By 1997, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition became a separate issue and is among the biggest revenue-makers for Time Inc. Ad sales in the 2005 issue reached around $35 million. The swimsuit edition currently contributes around seven percent of the annual income of the magazine.
In addition to the magazine itself, the company also creates revenues from other merchandise such as calendars. With the return of Kate Upton on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, it is anticipated that Time Inc. will increase its revenues since the popularity of Upton is undoubtedly starting to increase.
