Military Intervention In North Korea Opposed By China and Russia

China and Russia recently indicated that they are against foreign military intervention in North Korea over the nuclear test conducted recently.

Although the foreign ministers of the two condemned the recent nuclear test, they also indicated that the United Nations should come to an agreement about any action that will be implemented against reclusive country. China and Russia can veto any decisions since they are permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Yang Jiechi, the foreign minister of China, revealed that they are against the nuclear test conducted by North Korea in a news conference following discussions with Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia.

He added that a suitable response should be initiated by the UN Security Council although it should be aimed at maintaining peace in the Korean peninsula. Both China and Russia have decided that the situation should not be used as an excuse to stage a military intervention in North Korea, according to Lavrov.

The latest nuclear test was the third one conducted by the country ever since 2006. It resulted to warnings from countries included the United States. These warnings indicated that additional sanctions may be implemented on the country. Sanctions were intensified by the UN Security Council after the long-range rocket launch last December by the reclusive country.

The stand of China and Russia against military intervention in North Korea came as UN sanctions prohibited the country from working on nuclear or missile technology after the initial nuclear tests in 2006 and in 2009.
