North Korea Given New Sanctions By The UN
New sanctions that were aimed at limiting the missile and nuclear ambitions of North Korea were imposed by the United Nations. China indicated that it was supporting the full implementation of the measures.
Even as tensions remained high, Kim Jong-un dropped in on frontline military units. The latest measures by the UN Security Council include tightening of financial restrictions and moves to stop the country from receiving banned cargo.
The measures were decided after China agreed to support them. According to Susan Rice, US ambassador to the UN, countries should stop transfers if North Korea will pay for its missile and nuclear programs. The readiness of China will influence the success of the measures.
It will be necessary for China to check shipments if the measures will be strictly implemented. This will have a major effect on Kim, who faces the risk of moving away from his main ally and major trading partner. The Foreign Ministry of China indicated that the measures were essential and reasonable in response to the nuclear test of North Korea.
A number of luxury items will be prevented from entering the country although it mainly aims at preventing financial institutions from dealing with Pyongyang and stem cash flow.
The measures are similar to the ones used against Iran, which was supposedly successful. The latest measures may have a major effect on the cash flow of North Korea and limits its access to equipment for its missile and nuclear programs.
The nuclear threat issued by North Korea against the United States may result to additional isolation for the country. The administration of President Barack Obama also gave assurances to Japan and South Korea that it will provide deterrence against the latest threats.
The anti-American rhetoric of Pyongyang may be a scheme to force the US to negotiate with them. Pyongyang may ne more inclined to stages several clashes along the border rather than going on a full-scale war.
A number of small clashes between North and South Korea have occurred in recent years with the shelling of an island along disputed area where civilians were killed.
According to the defense ministry of South Korea, preparations were being made for a series of large-scale military exercises that will be conducted by North Korea.
