Kevin Ware Surgery Was A Success
Louisville announced that the surgery on the open fractured right tibia of Kevin Ware was successful. He suffered the injury in the 85-63 win of the Cardinals over Duke at the Midwest Regional final.
The bone was reset during the operation, which also saw the insertion of a rod into the leg. For the moment, the recovery period is still uncertain, although Fred Hina, a sports medicine director, indicated that his career may not end due to the injury.
Hina helped in stabilizing the injury of Kevin Ware as he was brought out of the court on a stretcher. Hina indicated that the injury had to be taken cared of immediately and as infection concerns arose. Questions were asked on possible disruption of veins and arteries.
The team physician of Louisville accompanied Ware in the ambulance, who is hoping to return to Louisville after Tuesday. Hina and the girlfriend of Ware also accompanied the player.
The mother of Kevin Ware, who is living in Atlanta plans to travel to see her son soon. Since the injury affected a bone that bears weight, it will take time to heal although he will be able to play again, Hina indicated.
The injury was similar to the fracture experienced by Michael Bush of Louisville in 2006. Bush was able to recover and is now playing with the Chicago Bears.
Rick Pitino, the coach of Louisville, said that he spoke with the trainer and was told that it was similar to the injury of Michael Bush. The trainer also told the coach that it may take time but he will be fine.
A tweet from Bush indicated that he cried after he saw the injury of Kevin Ware.
He said that he felt bad and saw a flashback of himself. According to the chairman of the orthopedic surgery department of Louisville, Dr. Craig Roberts, he was reminded of Joe Theismann after he saw the replay of the injury on TV. He said that the force and the angle where Kevin Ware landed may have caused the open fracture.
It appears like a bending fracture, which is similar to breaking a pencil with a finger. It required a considerable amount of force and a certain angle for it to happen.
These injuries would require around eight to twelve weeks before any signs of healing will show. However, he may become better with physical therapy and rehab within three months time.
Roberts also indicated that Kevin Ware may be able to get back on the court in the future despite the injury that he suffered in the game.
