“Iron Man 3” And “The Great Gatsby” Hit The Mark At The Box Office

This last weekend marked a successful one for “Iron Man 3” and “The Great Gatsby” as both racked in some impressive figures. The Marvel inspired movie brought in $72.7 million remaining the number one box office hit for the second week in a row in U.S. and Canada.

Baz Luhrmann’s latest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel retained second spot with a very impressive $50.1 million.

The Robert Downey Jr, action movie started strong last week with the second highest debut since “The Avengers” bringing in $174.1 million.

The movie is predicted to keep doing well but will probably be taken off first place as “Star Trek Into Darkness” is scheduled to be released next weekend. The second installment of the new “Star Trek” franchise is predicted to make an impressive $128 million in the debut weekend and a total of $346 in its U.S. theater run.

With Leonardo DiCaprio playing the charismatic millionaire Jay Gatsby the Baz Luhrmann revamping of the classic American novel was met with modest reviews. These reviews however didn't stop moviegoers and so “The Great Gatsby” surpassed initial projections of a $30 million opening weekend.

Both “Iron Man 3” and “The Great Gatsby” are the beginning of what promises to be a hit filled summer with “The Hangover 3” and “Fast and Furious 6” being just two more big names expected to bring in millions.
