Angelina Jolie Undergoes Double Mastectomy
Angelina Jolie, one of the best paid actresses in Hollywood told reporters during a press conference this Tuesday that she had underwent a double mastectomy after it was revealed she was carrying a high risk gene that could have exposed her to a difficult case of breast cancer.
Jolie, who is not only one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood but also a humanitarian and philanthropist talked about her choices and ordeal in a column in the New York Times.
Jolie said one of the main reasons she chose this method of action was her rather large family and husband, fellow Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt. She said that she wanted to be involved in her children’s life and that she didn't want to pass away like her mother at the early age of 56.
The actress said that doctors told her she had a 87 percent chance to get breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of getting ovarian cancer. Confronted with the hard data Jolie said via her New York Times column that she tried to minimize the risk as much as she could and that being proactive and undergoing the double mastectomy reduced her cancer risk to just 5 percent.
Angelina Jolie’s brave act was saluted and congratulated by other celebrities and cancer survivors all across the United States.
Mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely.
