Russian President Vladimir Putin Divorces After 30 Years
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia and one of the world’s most successful politicians in the last decade has decided to call it quits after spending nearly 30 years together with his wife Lyudmila Putin.
The news had a historic factor, as Putin will be the first leader of Russia to divorce ever since Peter the Great made his wife take nun vows in 1698.
The reason behind their breakup seems to be Putin’s public persona and his very busy schedule. The Russian president said that their divorce is amicable and that some people simply can’t handle that much exposure and that his wife “stood watch” for almost nine years.
His soon to be ex-wife confirmed Putin’s reasons and said that they hardly get to see each other. She also added that as their children are grown up and live separate lives, their relationship had reached its ending point.
The news was a shock to many Russians as Putin was known to be a churchgoer and a devout Christian Orthodox.
The Russian Orthodox Church doesn't look to fondly on divorce and Patriarch Kirill, the leading figure of the church for many years publicly condemned the act.
The world of social media didn't ignore Vladimir Putin’s divorce and was taken over by jokes coming from ordinary Russians and his political adversaries.
