The four actresses who played Matilda on the stage were also honored at the Tony Awards for theater excellence. Gregory Doran, the artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, indicated that the company took pride in the awards it won.

He said that it was an honor to be on Broadway and the company wants to give tribute to the US-based cast and crew who worked with them since January. They also want to thank the audience who watched their shows in New York.

The Tony Awards was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who opened the awards with a song and dance routine. He started the number with Harris singing in a pub, based on the musical “Once.” However, it is uncertain if the earnings of Broadway will increase due to the Tony Awards as attendance has gone down from around twelve million during the 2011-2012 season to around 11 million for this season.
