US Military Action In Syria Moves A Step Closer To Reality
US military action in Syria has moved a step closer to happening. This comes as Secretary of State John Kerry indicated that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian government against its own citizens.
Kerry said that President Barack Obama believes on the accountability of the people who utilized the chemical weapons. The White House has already started to communicate with congressional leaders on possible actions against Syria. Kerry revealed that the indiscriminate massacre using chemical weapons was morally obscene.
He added that he could not forget the image of a man holding up his dead child on the video showing the victims of the August 21 attack.
Jay Carney, a spokesman for the White House, revealed that the administration has not come to a decision on possible US military action in Syria. However, a number of options have been presented by the Pentagon to the president. These options included the use of cruise missiles, which will likely be the option to be used.
Submarines or surface ships can fire cruise missiles to hit targets in Syria. An unnamed source from the Defense Department revealed that four destroyers of the US Navy are already in position in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. US military action in Syria may use cruise missile to reduce risks for US pilots.
The options of the US are limited since the White House aims to avoid getting involved in a war in Syria. The US also considers many of the rebels groups to be unreliable partners. According to Senator Jack Reed, any attack should inflict suitable damage to prevent further use chemical weapons by the Syrian government.
However, the use of cruise missiles may also result to collateral damage, according to General Martin, the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman.
France and Great Britain have already started preparations for possible military action following the reported use of chemical weapons in Syria. The office of Prime Minister David Cameron revealed that a decision on the timetable for international response may make it essential to recall lawmakers ahead of schedule to the Parliament. This decision shows an indication of possible US military action in Syria together with its allies.
