Serena Williams Wins Her Fifth US Open Title

Serena Williams found Victoria Azarenka a worthy opponent in the US Open final before she finally captured the title after the third set.

Williams outlasted Azarenka, who was able to come back from a 1-4 deficit in the third set. Williams maintained her composure as she used her serve to overpower the second-ranked player in the world. The two players were greeted with wild applause from the audience after the match ended at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams complimented Azarenka, who was the same player she met in the US Open final last year. She said that Azarenka was a great opponent and fighter. Azarenka also praised Williams for her win, saying that it was incredible to play against the world’s best player in the final.

The victory is the fifth US Open championship for Serena Williams. It was also her 17th Grand Slam title. Williams needs to win one more Grand Slam before she will tie the record of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. She is also nearing the Open Era record held by Steffi Graf of 22 titles.

The win earned Serena Williams $3.6 million, which improved her career prize money to more than $50 million. Although Azarenka lost the match, she is expected to become the major obstacle for Williams each time they meet on the court. The game between Williams and Azarenka was the first time in a decade where the top two women players met in the US Open final.

The first set was not easy for Williams as she double-faulted and called for a foot fault before winning it, 7-5. However, Williams lost the second set to Azarenka, 6-7 (6-8), This was the first time she conceded a set in the entire tournament. The fourth game in the deciding set proved to be critical as Williams was able to break Azarenka for the sixth time in the game. Serena Williams did not turn back after this and won the US Open women’s for the fifth time.
