Guy Fawkes Day Commemorated With Million Mask March
An international protest against corruption was launched by members and supporters of Anonymous as it held the “Million Mask March” on Tuesday.
The protest coincided with the commemoration of Guy Fawkes Day, which was named after a Catholic terrorist arrested on November 5, 1605 by British authorities. Fawkes was in the middle of a plot to destroy the House of Lords as well as assassinate King James.
However, authorities were tipped off and discovered Fawkes with thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. The holiday was originally meant to honor King James I as well as embarrass Catholic dissenters. However, it evolved into a day that commemorates Fawkes, who was considered as an anti-authoritarian hero.
The use of Guy Fawkes masks by Anonymous contributed to the myth of Fawkes. The mask was created for the action movie “V for Vendetta” in 2005. The designer of the mask, David Lloyd, indicated that the importance of the mask is that it is being used by many people who aim to show it as a symbol of resistance against tyranny or perceived tyranny.
The “Million Mask March” was held by the hacktivist group on the same date as the holiday. A website of the event indicated that the protest was held in 450 locations around the world. The first location was Washington, D.C. At least one arrest happened in Washington, D.C., according to Occupy Wall Street.
The “Million Mask March” was also set to be held in Bangalore, Reykjavik, Perth, Amsterdam and Sarajevo. The event held on Guy Fawkes was described by a Facebook page as a call for various groups to defend humanity.
