Although “Thor: The Dark World” topped the box office over the weekend with $86.1 million, it was lower than what was expected by analysts. Analysts forecast the sequel to the movie to reach $90 million. However, it was able to surpass the projections of Disney.

Despite the notable box office weekend results, it was not able to match the opening of other comic-book superheroes, which reached at least $100 million in box office receipts in their opening weekends. However, it was impressive enough to top box office results of other movies over the weekend.

David Mumpower indicated that it should also be taken into consideration that the character was mainly unknown before 2011. During this time, the movie reached $181 million in box office sales.

Prior to the release of the first movie, Thor was only known to Norse mythology and Marvel comic fans. However, two years after it was released into the big screen, the character is capable of topping the box office in North America. Rottentomatoes.com indicated that “Thor: The Dark World” was recommended by around two-thirds of reviewers. The movie also received an A-minus rating by CinemaScore.

Thor took advantage of “The Avengers effect,” according to Box Office Mojo’s Ray Subers. Subers indicated that “The Avengers” had a wide audience market, which boosted sales of subsequent solo movies of the characters. “Thor: The Dark World” was able to get the fourth-biggest debut for the year. It came behind the $174 million of “Iron Man 3,” $116 million of the “Man of Steel,” and $97 million of “Fast & Furious 6.”

No other major newcomer was released over the weekend. Second place went to “Bad Grandpa” with $11.3 million while the third spot went to “Free Birds” with $11.2 million. Fourth place went to “Last Vegas” with $11.1 million. “Ender’s Game” came in fifth place with $10.3 million.

The final figures for “Thor: The Dark World” are expected to be available by Monday.
