Suicide Bombings In Lebanon Targeted Iran’s Embassy
Iran’s cultural attaché along with 23 other people died this Tuesday after two suicide bombings targeted Iran’s embassy in Lebanon. The attack was claimed by a Lebanon terrorist group known to have close ties to al-Qaida called the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.
The group said the reason behind the attacks was Iran’s support for the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his neatly 3 year civil war against Syrian rebels. The group threatened with more attacks if Iran doesn’t withdraw its support for the current Syrian leader.
Lebanese officials said they have footage that shows a man wearing an explosive strap running towards to walls of the Iranian embassy just before he blew himself up. Officials also say that the second explosion caused more damage and was dealt by a car bomb just up the street. Both explosions were considered by Lebanese security forces as suicide attacks.
Sheikh Sirajeddine Zuraiqat, considered to be the religious leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades confirmed the attacks were carried out by his organization and added that the “operation was a double martyrdom by Lebanese heroes”.
This isn't’t the first sign of sectarian violence in Lebanon as the country has suffered dozens of casualties due to bomb attacks and street violence as the neighboring Syrian conflict seems to be creating serious problems for Lebanon’s security forces.
